I found this the other day in some notes my dear Mom saved. Bless her heart, she had a real knack for keeping track of various details throughout her 96 years. I've been meaning to post it because it's very interesting how vastly time has changed the value of things, and I think this will amaze you as much as it did me.
My parents were married in May 1941 on a beautiful Spring afternoon. In preparation for the big day, this is what my Mom spent for the wedding.
Material for bride's dress - $11.22 Dress maker fees (which included fabric covered buttons all down the back of the dress) - $7.50 Veil (with yards & yards of tulle type fabric) - $4.95 Bra - $1.00 Shoes - $4.95 Flower girl dress - $1.88 Jewelry which included pearls on a chain for the bride and brooches as gifts for the bridesmaids - $7.00 Cake (2 layers home made) - $3.79 Pianist - $3.00
Unfortunately she didn't record how much the flowers cost which, of course, I'm most curious about. But all the bouquets were huge and I'm sure the difference of price in 77 years is the same.
